Tim Schafer Says He'd Love to Remaster More LucasArts Adventure Games if Grim Fandango Sells

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Minggu, 31 Agustus 2014 | 11.53

Double Fine's Tim Schafer said that he would love to remaster more LucasArts adventure games he worked on, though Grim Fandango Remastered will have to sell well in order for that to happen.

The news comes from the Grim Fandango: Bringing the Dead Back to Life PAX 2014 panel, where Schafer and other developers who worked on the original game talked about how they're handling various aspects of the remastered edition.

"We would love to make more of them," Schafer said in response to a fan in the audience who asked if they considered remaking or re-releasing other LucasArts adventure games. "If everyone buys 10 copies it will make it more likely that we'll make another," Schafer joked.

As to why they decided to tackle Grim Fandango first, Schafer said it was a combination of the team's passion for the game, the fact that it became hard to get only a few years after it was originally released, and the negotiations between Sony, Double Fine, and Disney, which acquired LucasArts last year.

Schafer and the panel also discussed the current state of Grim Fandango Remastered. The plan is to dig up the original assets, polish them, and use as much of them is possible in the remastered version. One exception is the game's music, which will be performed and recorded with the Melbourne orchestra just for the new version of the game. The Melbourne orchestra also worked with Double Fine on Broken Age.

At the moment, the team is still digging through the archives to see what they have, but has already begun improving textures, cutscenes, and other assets, as well as implementing new mouse and DualShock controls. A short video about the production of the game that played before the panel started also briefly showed it running on the tablet, though the game hasn't been officially announced for iOS or Android devices.

Double Fine announced that Grim Fandango will be released for PC, Mac, and Linux in addition to PS4 and Vita. A release date for the remastered version of the game has not yet been announced, but Double Fine says it will be a simultaneous launch across all platforms.

GS News Top 5 - Dragon Age Multiplayer; Hackers Take Down PSN!

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 30 Agustus 2014 | 11.52

Hi Jess, I hope your Saturday is going well.

DA:I Multiplayer - Nice that it's there for folks.  Me, I couldn't care less but each to their own.

Sony & VR - funny, Sony essentially discounted the technology (at least publically) when Oculus began to gain traction.  Now...  Oh, well, probably a case of the Sony marketing department changing their meds at some point.

Abuse & Harassment - Nicely stated position.  This is NOT ok, ever.  Folks can have their own viewpoints, but using these tactics to try to silence somebody else, especially using death threats, is unacceptable.  And I would like to point out to these nimrods that they really aren't anonymous.

There's the impression that their castles and other fortifications have changed ownership by various invaders many times over. The kingdom of Drangleic in Dark Souls II not only feels ancient, but haunted as well. In the Crown of the Old Iron King add-on, the ashen bodies that litter the open spaces of Brume Tower effectively echo the flash-heated victims of Pompeii. Merely touching them casts their fragile shapes into the wind, which is inevitable given that they're littered around the game's fields of battle. Dark Souls might be punishing, but it doesn't punish you for disrespecting the departed, not surprising for a series that encourages the player to embrace death.

Whereas the South-American-inspired temple in Sunken King helped give an aptly disconnected feel from the main game, there's a sense that Old Iron King is meant as natural extension of Iron Keep. It's as if Brume Tower were the original mine and furnace of Drangleic, and Iron Keep were built as the fancier upgrade. It explains the lack of moving parts in the map's various towers. In a land strewn with large misplaced gears and other clockwork pieces, Brume Tower is both antiquated and charming. It's of little surprise that recovering the towers' keys and switches make up many of this DLC's objectives. These towers, by the way, are impressively intricate and are more involving than Dark Souls II's other vertical areas, like The Pit. Brume Tower feels like a fortification built around its towers as opposed to the other way around.

Unlike the pervasively dark Sunken King DLC, Old Iron King offers sunlight and digital Vitamin D.

The settings of Crown of the Old Iron King are both fantastical and relatable, but nowhere near practical. Gigantic suits of armor hang inexplicably under elevator platforms, hinting that humans10 times normal size once protected Drangleic. A part of me laughs at the sight of enormous chain link bridges made of actual chains. I nervously get the camera angle just right so I don't fall off and wonder if I'll have to endure combat on these narrowest of bridges. From Software would be cruel enough to subject us to such tribulations. As it turns out, you won't have to fight anyone on these chains, unless you lack foresight and lure an enemy there yourself. At that point, any deaths on the chains are all on you.

Explore thoroughly enough and you eventually find Iron Passage. Given its cavernous, yet tight spaces and its deep roster of demons, this optional area is a clear follow-up to the Cave of the Dead from Crown of the Sunken King. These caves would be the most challenging sections of the Lost Crowns trilogy if not for the two helpful phantoms you can summon. This cavernous journey concludes with a duel against a blue variant of the Smelter Demon, further underscoring the uninspired boss designs of these expansions. Same goes for Fume Knight, a mandatory opponent in Brume Tower who dual-wields melee weapons not unlike The Pursuer and Old Dragonslayer.

If you seek variety, look to Old Iron King's lesser foes. Agile assassins exhibit talents with small blades, lightning spells, and short distance teleportation, so killing them feels all the more gratifying. The most frightening group of creatures appears around the DLC's halfway point: portly humanoids that crawl toward you due to their missing legs. They're especially creepy when they charge at you and self-destruct in an explosion of flame. Picture the legless T-800 at the end of The Terminator mixed with the fireballs in the series.

In Iron Keep, there was an odd ease and simplicity in dipping a group of enemies into a lethal pool of lava by the pull of a switch. Similar conveniences appear in this DLC, provided you're able to spot these situational tricks before you fall victim to these traps yourself. Brume Tower is populated with mutants who carry barrels of explosive and flammable liquid. Their bow-legged movement makes them look scarier than they actually are. Their non-hostile behavior should be your first clue of their usefulness. Much like the windmill puzzle in Dark Souls II, this DLC provides its share of "Ah-ha!" moments, which almost always reveal themselves as you continue to explore and take stock of your surroundings.

I've grown to be that person who can stand in an old building and envision the ghosts of those who have roamed its halls. It's an achievement when a digital environment can trigger similar meditations, something that the Souls games have pulled off time and time again. From Software is keenly aware of this, as evidenced by a memorable, and more importantly, playable flashback sequence of Dark Souls II. What is noteworthy about Crown of the Old Iron King is how it conveys a deep sense history without the help of a flashback. Its slumbering defenses await your arrival, just as they have for countless heroes before and for those who'll follow in your footsteps. It's these guardians who act as the connective tissue between past and present, formidable as always.

Earlier this week, numerous players that their accounts were seeing unauthorized transactions, in some cases totalling as much as $150. Now, publisher Trion Worlds has responded, issuing a statement that explains the situation.

"Let us start by saying this very clearly: Trion Worlds' security has not been compromised in any way," the publisher said. "There has been absolutely no breach in Trion's servers."

The unauthorized transactions were the result of bots obtaining user information from other sites and then gaining access to ArcheAge accounts if the username/password combinations matched up. What happened was, unfortunately, not a new occurrence, a Trion Worlds representative said.

"If players consistently use simple or repeated passwords across different online services, these bots may get access to their accounts," Trion Worlds said. "Because of the current momentum around ArcheAge, hundreds of millions of such attempts were made from well over a million different IP addresses in the last few weeks, only a fraction of which ended up being successful [on August 26]."

Trion Worlds will provide full refunds to affected players, some of whom say they were affected even though they never played ArchAge. And beginning tomorrow, Trion Worlds will roll out a new security feature to its account management system that will ask you to input a special, one-time-use code when accessing the service from another computer or a computer you haven't used in a while.

You should also change your password and make sure you don't use the same password for multiple sites, Trion Worlds said (though that is good advice anyway). You can change your Trion Worlds password right now .

ArcheAge is a MMO created by Jake Song, the man perhaps best known for his work on the series. The game, developed by XLGames, aims to separate itself from the pack by letting players adventure through the world at their own pace and by blazing their own trails. Respawn Entertainment has a in the works for , as well as more free updates--including new game modes--but it's going to have to find a point where it largely moves on from the game, according to community manager Abbie Heppe.

Speaking with during Gamescom earlier this month, Heppe said, "Alongside the paid DLC maps, we have been doing free content updates, with the next one being on I think the 6th? So we do have some plans to release some more free content, we've got some cool new modes on the way. But at a certain point, we are going to have to wind down so that we can move on and do other things."

Heppe noted the number of updates the game has received in the five-plus months since its release, which have added , , the , and other new features, in addition to fixes and tweaks. "[S]o, yeah, at a certain point we've got to give some people a break and then think about where we go next," she said.

It's interesting to hear this discussed so openly; while it's inevitable that Respawn will eventually move on, it wasn't long ago that we heard Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella talk about how how he hoped the community would stick around for "a really long time" . What Heppe said doesn't necessarily mean the community has disappeared, but it's true that it hasn't been consistently huge on all platforms--hence the reason why .

Just because Respawn is going to move on from developing new Titanfall content at some point doesn't mean it'll abandon the game completely. "Obviously, if there's anything that totally breaks then yeah, we'll absolutely fix that," Heppe said. "But we're going to have to wind down and then move on. But we still have some cool stuff in the works before that happens."

A big part of the was the way it brought casual and non-gamers into the industry for the first time through games like and . But going forward, Nintendo will focus its efforts on making games for the core crowd, suggests Shigeru Miyamoto, the man who created Mario and works at the company as senior managing director.

In a new interview with Edge Magazine, posted by sister site , Miyamoto said he is no longer interested in making games that cater to people who only "passively" enjoy games.

"[These are] the sort of people who, for example, might want to watch a movie. They might want to go to Disneyland," he said. "Their attitude is, 'OK, I am the customer. You are supposed to entertain me.' It's kind of a passive attitude they're taking, and to me it's kind of a pathetic thing. They do not know how interesting it is if you move one step further and try to challenge yourself [with more advanced games]."

CVG notes that this is the first time a high-ranking Nintendo executive has publicly stated plans to move away from the casual crowd. The original Wii sold , and, as mentioned, its massive success was due in part to the way it brought new consumers to gaming.

The Wii's successor, the , has been less of a hit. Launched in 2012, the system has now sold , which is below the ; this despite Nintendo's console being less expensive and having a full-year head start. The Nintendo 3DS family of systems, meanwhile, have .

Part of the reason why Miyamoto contends that Nintendo's games no longer need to appeal to casual gamers is because iOS and Android smartphones and tablets have taken root.

"In the days of and Wii, Nintendo tried its best to expand the gaming population," he said. "Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It's a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people's daily lives."

This is not the first time Miyamoto has offered up what might be considered a controversial quote. Most recently, he said there wasn't a wide variety of games on display at E3, which he claimed is indicative of "" in the video game industry.

Small hard drives in game consoles are largely a thing of the past; while storage remains a concern--I know my and have been threatening to run out of space for months--it's rare for a single game to be too big for a console's hard drive. Unfortunately, that is soon to be the case for players on a certain model of , forcing those people to upgrade their system in order to continue playing online.

A recent post on Rockstar's (via ) informs owners of the 12GB PS3 model that they will soon need to purchase a storage upgrade if they want to be able to play Grand Theft Auto Online. That's because, following the 1.16 patch released on August 19 (the ), the system will no longer have enough space to store future updates and content, which must be installed to play GTA V's online multiplayer mode.

Being limited to the 12GB of internal flash storage won't prevent the single-player mode from being playable, but it will mean you'll be unable to take advantage of any new features or changes introduced in future updates. It also means you'll be missing out on the , as well as the that will be added. .

Given the size of the hard drive, you could be forgiven for thinking the 12GB PS3 was available at launch in 2006. (The launch models carried 20GB and 60GB hard drives, actually.) In fact, it first debuted in Europe in 2012, before then being . The model is positioned as being ideal for streaming content and playing disc-based games, though, at least in this case, that's not proving to be the case.

Swapping out the hard drive in the super-slim model of PS3 (of which the 12GB is one) is a fairly simply process. You can , or you can check out Sony's official instructions .

Some people like to accuse Madden of being the same game every year, but that simply isn't true--players now apparently have the ability to fly into the air, unbeknownst to everyone around them.

The video above, posted to by player Grant Tucker, shows a hilarious glitch he encountered in . In a game between the St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings, a defensive lineman is knocked to the ground, which is nothing unusual. He then proceeds to fly into the air before--in my favorite part of the video--crash-landing almost 20 yards away a few seconds later. (Impressively, the defense still got the sack.)

Bugs and glitches are nothing new to the series, and, looking at the official Madden , it seems that this year's game is no exception. Some of these are far more serious (and much less amusing) than players flying into the air, with players reporting that the game freezes at various points, including the main menu, depth chart, and loading screens. Other players are upset over the game's lack of an online team play mode, which is not a glitch, but a deliberate omission on the part of developer EA Tiburon.

Deep Silver announced today that , the upcoming third-person action game for , , and , will launch on November 18.
