GS News - Casey Hudson Leaves BioWare; Wii U Name is Abysmal

@suppaphly42 The name and marketing of the WiiU wasn't great, but I don't think that's anywhere near "half" the problem :).  My opinion has been that there just isn't a big market for the "low end" console anymore.  Mobile took over the casuals, families/kids, etc.

Tablets and phones do a lot of non-gaming things a lot better than a console, they're cheaper, even an expensive tablet (or 2-3 cheaper ones for each kid/family member) will beat a WiiU once you factor in accessories and games, they're totally portable, and more convenient and easier to use, whether truly so or just by perception, and they are also overall a much "hotter" and "cooler" :) product now and for the last several years.

Now, are the games as good on mobile, some might argue that they are in some cases, but forget arguing, let's just say no they really aren't.  That's not the real question though, the question is, are the games good enough to satisfy those markets, like for example kids, absolutely they are good enough.

And that last bit is part of a very important overall situation that many of us gamers just don't understand.  Whether we're talking about WiiU, Playstation, Xbox, we - the kind of people that hang around gaming sites and post comments and such - are actually a pretty small subset of the gaming market.

Someone might say to me no way maaan, mobile sucks, no way Angry Birds can be better than a Zelda game!  Well guess what, the majority of Wii (not the WiiU, the Wii, that super successful console that was sold out and hard to find even the 2nd Christmas after it came out) owners never purchased a single Zelda game for their console, heck I wonder how many of them even know what Zelda is.  Most people that Nintendo expected to buy a WiiU don't know and/or care about Zelda.  Most people out there with a PS3 or Xbox 360, even if they play it a fair bit and own all the big titles, probably never look at Gamespot.  That's reality, that's the gaming market, and it's especially the case with the typical Nintendo buyer in the last 10yrs.
