Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 29 Juni 2013 | 11.53

It's difficult to imagine any woman genuinely falling for Larry Laffer. His hair is thinning, his breath is bad in a way that defies description, he perpetually looks to be a few hours from giving birth to a basketball, and when he talks, he sounds almost exactly like Maxwell Smart, the bumbling secret agent from the '60s television series. Those personality flaws are part of the joke, though, and that joke was enough to turn the unappealing antihero into a cash cow for prolific adventure game publisher Sierra On-Line during the late '80s and early '90s.

Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded is an apparent attempt to offer a fond look back at that dubious era. Series creator Al Lowe asked the Internet for the money he needed in order to revisit the earliest title in the long-running series, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, and his wish was granted. Larry Laffer is back for a triumphant second run, only now women are rejecting him in high-definition, and his quest for true love requires additional effort. The problem is that even with improvements, Larry is a relic.

Reloaded makes concessions to the modern era, but its roots show quite clearly. Larry appears on mostly static backdrops, and you click onscreen icons to encourage interaction. Each screen contains several points of interest, and each poke and prod is narrated with gusto. The actor clearly relished his role, and he manages to make the rampant sexual innuendo come off every bit as sleazily as possible. There's lots of material to work with, too, which means you hear numerous jokes about sex and the male and female anatomy even though the artists didn't bother to illustrate the bulk of it (which is just as well, in some cases). The dialogue is also fond of breaking the fourth wall, sometimes even for genuine laughs.

Larry finds himself exploring the city of Lost Wages, which is a transparent parody of Las Vegas if that city featured only five proper buildings and a looping road to connect them. Attractions include Lefty's Bar, a mini-mart, a love chapel, a multi-floor casino, and a disco club. Sidewalks line those buildings, and it's possible to interact with a few pedestrians who appear there mostly at random, but the game takes place in a very confined space overall. You need to hail a cab if you want to safely explore the city, because wandering along the sidewalks usually leads to an alley where a thug will beat Larry to death.

Even with so many restrictions in place, it's easy to run into temporary dead ends as you try to coach Larry to coital bliss. Reloaded plays out as a more perverted version of the more monotonous games of its original era, so that whenever you find a new location, you need to run around licking, groping, examining, and talking to everything, just to make sure you're not missing something. Your alternative is to potentially overlook an important clue, then spend a half hour or more making a circuit of the city, trying to discover what you missed. Sometimes this process becomes ridiculous. For instance, the casino has eight floors. Most of those floors have doors you can tap on to interrupt people who are having sex on the other side, but you can't assume that's always true, because what if you then miss something important? You have no choice but to hear every silly joke at least once, and perhaps many times if you find yourself truly flummoxed.

Moments when you're wandering around because you've missed a clue--perhaps even one that you've been holding in your inventory the whole time--only serve to highlight the game's most regrettable flaw: its interface. The new setup may have been improved compared to the old standard, but it still has a long way to go. If you are wandering a street and interacting with objects outside, that requires the hand icon to be active. Passing through the door to enter some buildings may (or may not) then require you to switch to the foot icon. Once inside, you need to switch back…except when you don't. Riding a taxi from one location to another is also inconvenient, not to mention expensive. You can earn additional money to pay for fare only by playing games of chance, so you're essentially encouraged to save a file after each win and to reload one after you lose, lest you exhaust your funds and find yourself forced to accept charity from a wandering bum.

There are completely new scenes involving a new potential love of Larry's life, a girl named Jasmine. Even finding a way to talk to her can prove difficult, though, and then gaining her affections requires a fetch quest and quite a bit of inventory diving. It's nice that new content has been added to give returning fans something new to experience, but the quality of that new content is hardly exceptional. It also doesn't add much depth to the adventure once you know what is expected of you. If you've lived the Laffer life before, this adventure isn't likely to outlast a half-hour sitcom episode.

One piece of good news, though, is that no setback has to be a big deal. When Larry meets an untimely end, the game presents you with a comical screen that you can click through quickly if you're in a hurry, and then Larry appears a short distance from the source of his previous demise. There's no real penalty, which means that you don't have to feel that you're punished for experimenting as you play the game. Some of the potential deaths are also quite cute, so it's worth seeing them happen at least once just for the sake of comedy. The artists clearly had a lot of fun with some of the animations, and for that matter, all of the game assets are sufficiently sharp and clear to convincingly capture the characters and the seedy environments they occupy.

Ultimately, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded is most likely to appeal to those who played and enjoyed his old games, back when they were a big deal. The remake is packed with clever dialogue, and the HD artwork looks very nice, but there's not enough new gameplay to hide the fact that the original Leisure Suit Larry game was every bit as shallow as its sexually frustrated protagonist. Mr. Laffer makes a terrific jester, but he's not good for a whole lot more.

Minecraft PC passes 11 million sales

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 25 Juni 2013 | 11.53

Mojang's open-ended sandbox game reaches new sales milestone.

The PC/Mac version of Minecraft crossed 11 million in life-to-date sales today--up from 10 million in April--propelling the franchise to all-new heights.

At $26.95 per copy, Minecraft for PC/Mac has now generated $296,450,000 in revenue.

Minecraft: Pocket Edition passed 10 million sales in May, while the downloadable Xbox 360 version crossed 6 million at the end of March.

The disc-based Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition launched earlier this month, and according to creator Markus "Notch" Persson, was the fastest selling console game in the United States last week.

Microsoft has described Minecraft as a "beast," and earlier this month, confirmed the game is coming to the Xbox One.

E3 Highlights: Best Controllers - PS4 vs. Xbox One

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 24 Juni 2013 | 11.52

@udubdawgz Habit ever since PSOne. I've always had my index fingers for the shoulders (L1,R1) and middle fingers for triggers (L2,R2). Probably from playing Tekken and Street Fighter a lot.

On the 360 pad, my hands are actually kind of smaller so my left index wraps over the top left edge of the controller and gets in the way of the stick all the time. Same thing happens hitting the B button. It might be bigger, but the placement of the controls make it feel really cramped. The sticks and triggers aren't nearly as precise.

With that said, I'm excited to check out the Xbone controller because I use the 360 pad for the PC pretty regularly.

Also excited for the changes to the PS4 controller. The sticks were definitely too close and playing games like Need For Speed and GT5, my fingers would slip off the triggers a lot. That's kind of critical in those games.

More layoffs at EA - Report

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 19 Juni 2013 | 11.52

Source says Battlefield publisher let go of a "small number" of employees recently as part of company-wide restructuring.

The layoffs at Electronic Arts are reportedly continuing. A source has told Polygon that the Battlefield publisher has let go a "small number" of employees recently.

This source said fewer than 20 employees were affected by the job cuts, which are supposedly related to the company-wide restructuring effort that EA began months ago.

This move resulted in a 10 percent reduction in the publisher's total workforce--or approximately 900 people.

It is unclear which department or departments the cuts came from, though a game research analyst said on Twitter that he had been laid off today.

EA is not the only company cutting jobs. Yesterday, Square Enix confirmed that Hitman developer IO Interactive had laid off 50 percent of its total workforce and canceled multiple projects as it refocuses on development of a new AAA Hitman title.

NPD: Xbox 360 US May sales hit 114,000

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 18 Juni 2013 | 11.52

[UPDATE] The NPD Group has now published its full report for the month of May, which provides greater depth into how the industry fared in the United States during the period.

The original story follows below.

Microsoft sold 114,000 Xbox 360 units in May in the United States, the company announced today, citing data from the NPD Group. The Xbox 360 has been the top-selling system in the US for 29 straight months now.

That figure is well below the 270,000 Xbox 360 units Microsoft sold during May 2012.

Total retail spend for Xbox 360 (hardware, software, and accessories) for May 2013 came in at $149.8 million, more than any other console, according to NPD data.

Microsoft's future ambitions may revolve around the Xbox One, but the company does not plan to abandon the Xbox 360 anytime soon. Xbox boss Phil Spencer said last month that he believes the platform will "be very vibrant for many years."

A redesigned Xbox 360 model was announced during Microsoft's E3 briefing last week and is available now.

NPD: Injustice: Gods Among Us May's best-selling game in US

Injustice: Gods Among Us was the best-selling title in the United States during May, a month that saw steep overall industry declines, according to data published by the NPD Group today. The fighting game from Warner Bros. was also April's best-selling game in the US.

Rounding out the top five best-sellers were Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Donkey Kong: Country Returns, Dead Island: Riptide, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Overall, total industry sales slid a significant 25 percent to $386.3 million. According to the NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan, however, this data represents only about half of the true consumer retail spend for the month.

"These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software, and accessories, which account for roughly 50 percent of the total consumer spend on games," Callahan said in a statement.

"When taking into account our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in May such as used and rentals at $91 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including micro-transactions, subscriptions, mobile apps, and the consumer spend on social network games at $339 million, the total consumer spend in May is $787 million."

On the hardware front, total sales dropped 31 percent to $96 million. The Xbox 360 was the top-selling console platform for the 29th straight month, moving 114,000 units in the period (down from 270,000 last year). The 3DS posted the best year-over-year trend, Callahan said.

"Nintendo's 3DS edged out the 360 as the top selling platform across hardware and portables. However, the 360 was the top selling console hardware platform this month for the twenty-ninth consecutive month," Callahan said. "The 3DS had the best year-over-year trending for hardware units, with units sales essentially flat from last May."

Sony has not disclosed PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita sales for May.

As for software, this category saw the most precipitous fall, diving 44 percent to $187.6 million.

"Softness in new physical entertainment software sales stemmed from a decline in the number of new launches, with over 30 percent fewer new SKUs, as well as poor performance of the new SKUs that were released," Callahan said. "New SKUs generated over seventy percent less units on a per-SKU basis, and a decrease of over eighty percent revenue per SKU."

Nintendo 3DS software sales were a bright spot for the month, up 60 percent from May 2012. In addition, three 3DS titles factored into the top-ten chart for May.

"Overall entertainment software declines, down forty-four percent, were driven partly by sharp year-over-year declines within PC games due to poor comparisons to last year's Diablo III release," Callahan said.

"In May 2013, the top 10 games represented a lower percentage of sales compared to games from the previous few Mays at 18 percent of overall unit sales and 25 percent of overall dollars, compared to 30 percent of units and 45 percent of dollars in May 2012," Callahan continued. "This is contrary to trends we've been seeing over the last few years with the top ten games generating a larger percentage of overall sales and may be indicative of the weak new launch performance this May."

The accessories category posted the smallest declines, falling only 6 percent to $115.3 million.

"This is best May for point and subscription card sales on record for both unit and dollar sales," Callahan said. "Year-to-date, Skylanders accessory sales are trending positively, up close to fifty percent in unit sales and sixty percent in dollars compared to last year."

MAY US GAME SALES (May 5-June 1, 2013)

Non-PC hardware: $96.0 million (-31%)
