PlayStation Plus Free Games of January 2015 for PS4, PS3, and Vita

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 31 Desember 2014 | 11.52

If you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber and you still haven't downloaded your free December games, there's still a little bit of time (and remember, you don't have to own the console to add the games to your account). But PlayStation has already announced the new games you'll be able to download for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Vita next month.

The following games were announced specifically for the UK via Facebook, but staying in line with previous months, we expect the same games to carry across to the US as well.

PlayStation 4:

PlayStation 3:

PlayStation Vita:

If you got a new PlayStation system for the holidays, be sure to add December's games to your account now.

Boyd Multerer

Xbox Live founder Boyd Multerer, who was the first person on Xbox Live and also helped create the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, has quit Microsoft. He announced the news today on Twitter, saying he's leaving "to do something new." Multerer had worked at Microsoft for nearly two decades.

Most recently, Multerer worked at Microsoft as director of development for Xbox.

He's not the first high-ranking Xbox figure to leave the company over the past 18 months. Others have included former Xbox boss Don Mattrick, former chief product officer Marc Whitten, Xbox Entertainment Studios executives Nancy Tellem and Jordan Levin, and Xbox One TV designer Ben Smith.

Steam Winter Sale 2014 Pick of the Day

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 29 Desember 2014 | 11.52

It's that time of the year when any leftover money you've got after buying gifts, arranging holiday travel, and donating to worthwhile causes is going to go PC games. The Steam Winter sale is live, and we'll be updating this story every day with what we think is the best of the best as well as all of the other day's deals. Things are structured little different this year:

  • New featured deals pop up every 24 hours, but will last for 48 hours
  • Flash Sales will update every 12 hours, but those deals will be available for 24 hours
  • Community's choice deals will update every 24 hours

What are you picking up (or hoping to buy) during Valve's quarterly sales event? Let us know in the comments below.

Day 11: December 28, 2014

Our pick: Divinity: Original Sin -- $26.79 (-33%)

At $26.79, our PC game of the year Divinity: Original Sin is far from the cheapest game on Steam's Holiday Sale, but it's still more than worth it at that price. As GameSpot's review said, "to play Divinity: Original Sin is to fall in love with role-playing games all over again."

Other Day 11 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 10: December 27, 2014

Our pick: Alan Wake -- $2.99 (-90%)

Alan Wake is a few years old at this point, but it still looks and plays great. As GameSpot said in its review, the game's creepy atmosphere, fantastic combat, and clever storytelling make Alan Wake's quest thrilling from beginning to end. For $3, it's a must if you haven't played it already, and if you have, it's still worth revisiting on max settings on the PC in anticipation of Remedy's Quantum Break.

Other Day 10 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 9: December 26, 2014

Our pick: Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons -- $1.49 (-90%)

Brothers is clever puzzle game with a huge heart. It's a short, beautiful experience, and an absolute steal at $1.49. Once you'll play it you'll understand why we're excited for developer Hazelight's next game.

Other Day 9 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 8: December 25, 2014

Our pick: South Park: The Stick of Truth -- $13.59 (-66%)

A perfect transition from TV show to game. While not every South Park game has been a hit, this one perfectly encapsulates the snarky humor of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. Read our South Park review and check it out on Steam here.

Other Day 8 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 7: December 24, 2014

Our pick: Terraria -- $1.99 (-80%)

Simplistic graphics doesn't mean simple game. Kind of like a 2D Minecraft, Terraria is a game where your imagination can run wild. And at $2, you can afford a four-pack to get your friends in on the action with you. Read our review and check out the game on Steam.

Other Day 7 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 6: December 23, 2014

Our pick: BioShock Infinite-- $7.49 (-75%)

The continuation of the BioShock series, and likely the final one from Ken Levine, Infinite was a divisive title among fans. But either way, it's a game worth checking out, especially for $7.50. Read our GameSpot review and check out the game on Steam here.

Other Day 5 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 5: December 22, 2014

Our pick: Grand Theft Auto IV -- $4.99 (-75%)

Sure, everyone might be more focused on getting Grand Theft Auto V on PC, but that doesn't mean that $5 for GTAIV isn't a steal. And with a crazy modding community that's been supporting the game for years, there's plenty to explore outside the main game as well. Read our review of the game and check it out on Steam here.

Other Day 5 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

  • Clickteam Fusion -- $33.99 (-66%)
  • 3DMark -- $4.99 (-80%)
  • Fuse Character Creator -- $33.99 (-66%)

Day 4: December 21, 2014

Our pick: Bulletstorm -- $3.99 (-80%)

There are some bigger and newer games on today's list, but with an 80 percent discount that brings it down to $4, you should take the opportunity to catch up with Bulletstorm, a score-driven first-person shooter with some really great, original weapons.

Other Day 3 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 3: December 20, 2014

Our pick: Metro 2033 Redux -- $12.49 (-50%)

Metro 2033 was released four years ago, but with the Redux treatment, it's still one of the best-looking first-person shooters on PC. If you didn't play it back then, you owe it to yourself to pick up the discounted version. Read GameSpot's Metro 2033 Redux review and check it out on Steam here.

Other Day 3 Deals:

Flash Sale:

Community's Choice:

Day 2: December 19, 2014

Our pick: Castle Crashers -- $1.49 (-90%)

At 90% off, there's no reason not to buy developer The Behemoth's colorful beat-em-up. It makes a good gift as well; after all, the game is a lot more fun with friends. Read our Castle Crashers review and check it out on Steam here.

Other Day 2 Deals:

Community's Choice:

Flash sale round 1:

Flash sale round 2

Day 1: December 18, 2014

Our pick: Dark Souls 2 -- $14.70 (63%)

The follow-up to the crazy-hard Demon's Souls and the crazy-hard Dark Souls is... still crazy-hard. The game might not be to everyone's tastes, but it's a series that you have to respect for sticking to its punishing formula. Read our Dark Souls 2 review and check it out on Steam.

Other 48-hour deals:

Community's Choice hasn't kicked off yet, but here are the first six flash sale games:

Flash sale round 2

And an additional six flash games (note that the deals below didn't expire 24 hours after posting.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Humiliates Players With Chicken Hat

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will include a special chicken hat item that will make the game easier, the game's designer Hideo Kojima has announced.

Kojima revealed the new item during a special Christmas stream. Metal Gear fans watched the three hours-long video, probably hoping for some more exciting news or maybe even a release date, but it wasn't until the 2:45:00 mark that Kojima made his big reveal, which in the end was nothing more than the chicken hat.

According to Kotaku, the game will offer players the item if they keep dying and retrying the same section. If they choose to wear it, enemies will be slower to spot and react to players. The only price is the humiliation of looking like a chicken.

The Phantom Pain launches in 2015 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. A PC version of the open-world game is also in the works, but Konami has not announced a release date for it.

For more on the game, check out our previous coverage.

PlayStation Network Still Down as Xbox Live Returns [UPDATE 3]

UPDATE -- 08:20 p.m., December 27

It appears that the PlayStation Network is back online. Sony hasn't made an official announcement about the state of its online services, but we were able to access the PlayStation Store both on PlayStation platforms and on the PC.

According to PlayStation's official website, the PlayStation Network is also online for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PS Vita. Sony said that you should check out its Contact Support page if you're still you're still having issues.

Keep checking this story, which will we continue to update with new details as they come in.

UPDATE -- 12:30 p.m., December 27

Sony has addressed the ongoing service issues with the PlayStation Network in a post to the PlayStation Blog.

"The video game industry has been experiencing high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay," Sony said. "Multiple networks, including PSN, have been affected over the last 48 hours."

Sony said that there may be more disruptions in service due to surges in traffic, but that its engineers will continue to work to restore service as quickly as possible.

"If you received a PlayStation console over the holidays and have been unable to log onto the network, know that this problem is temporary and is not caused by your game console," Sony said. "We'll continue to keep you posted on Twitter at @AskPlayStation and we'll update this post once the problems subside."

PlayStation Network's status was improved to "intermittent" for a short time earlier today according to PlayStation's official website, but is now offline again, as you can see in the message above.

Sony hasn't said when network services will be back in full. Keep checking this story, which will we continue to update with new details as they come in.

UPDATE -- 6:40 a.m. PST, December 27

The PlayStation Network is slowly coming back online for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and the PS Vita, Sony has announced late last night via its official Ask PlayStation Twitter account.

We in San Francisco were still unable to connect to the The PlayStation Store via the PlayStation consoles, but other users around the world are reporting they had more luck, and we were also able to connect to the PlayStation Store website on the PC, which wasn't working yesterday.

PlayStation Network was also still offline according to PlayStation's official website, as you can see in the message above.

Sony hasn't said when network services will be back in full. Keep checking this story, which will we continue to update with new details as they come in.

UPDATE -- 3:54 PST

Still no word on when to expect PSN services to resume, though both users and some GameSpot staff have had random luck in both getting online and connected to some games.

According to Sony, "No ETA available yet, but our Team is working to fix it as soon as possible, thank you for your patience."

UPDATE: The PlayStation support twitter account has begun issuing updates, telling individual users, "Our engineers are continuing to work hard to resolve the network issues users are experiencing. Thank you for your patience."

However, when will PSN be back online? Sony says, "No ETA available yet, but our Team is working hard to fix it as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience."

The original story appears below.

Following network outtages for the PlayStation Network that started on Christmas Eve, and which extended on Christmas day to both PSN and Xbox Live, Sony's online gaming infrastructure remains offline today.

The Xbox Live status page currently lists all core services for Xbox 360 and Xbox One as "up and running," though access to apps for MLG.tv, Maxim, and IGN are "limited."

PlayStation Network, meanwhile, is completely offline according to its status site (and verified by the fact that I can't log in online). Sony has not issued an official word yet on the cause of the attacks or when it expects online services to be operational again. We'll update this story with further details as they're made available.

GTA 5 Christmas Gifts Extended Due to PSN and Xbox Live Outage

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 27 Desember 2014 | 11.53

Rockstar Games is extending Grand Theft Auto V's Christmas update because of the recent PlayStation Network and Xbox Live service issues, the developer has announced.

"Due to issues with PSN & XBL connectivity, we're extending the GTA Online Festive Surprise Christmas Day inventory gifts for the time being," Rockstar said via its official Twitter account. The developer didn't say until when its extending the holiday-themed update, so its safe to assume it'll be available until further notice.

Sony's PlayStation Network and Microsoft's Xbox Live were down starting on Christmas Eve, due to an apparent denial-of-service (DDoS) attack by the same group that claimed responsibility for grounding Sony Online Entertainment President John Smedley's flight back in August and other DDoS attacks.

Xbox Live services were restored earlier today, but PlayStation Network is still inaccessible to many players, sadly preventing many of those who got PlayStation 4s this Christmas from playing their new consoles.

Check GameSpot's ongoing coverage of PlayStation Network's status for the latest updates.

GTA Online's holiday-themed additions includes snowball fights, ugly Christmas sweaters, cookie-face masks, and lots more.

PSN and Xbox Live Taken Down for Christmas

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Jumat, 26 Desember 2014 | 11.53

If you've got a new console or just some new games you're hoping to try out today, you might be out of luck. Both Xbox Live and PlayStation Network are both currently unavailable.

The Xbox LIve status page says that service is limited and that, "We're aware that some of you are experiencing trouble signing in to Xbox Live, and we want you to know we're working to address this as quickly as we possibly can. Thanks for your patience! We'll update you on our progress in a half hour."

The PlayStation Network is also listed as "offline," and the PlayStation Network status page reads: "We are aware that some users are experiencing difficulty logging into the PSN. We will update this article with any changes that occur in regards to this issue. Thank you for your patience."

A group called Lizard Squad on Twitter is taking responsibility for the attacks, which likely result from inundating and overloading the networks with traffic. While this doesn't comprise the integrity of the networks or your personal information, it's still a pretty big inconvenience. We won't include links to the Twitter profile, since the main goal of the group seems to not have any goal besides gaining more attention.

We'll update this story with more details as they become available.

PS4, PS3, PS Vita Games Discounted In Latest PSN Flash Sale

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 25 Desember 2014 | 11.52

@garyhove Well, in these cases, digital download IS cheaper than physical.  At least, cheaper than full retail.

No, this isn't a great sale, though.  There are a few gems--FIFA, Madden and NHL are good deals for $35--but others like Shadow of Mordor have already been cheaper just in the last few weeks.

Personally I prefer digital.  No disc swapping to mess with, no worries about damaged or lost discs, can install on multiple consoles with same owner.  The fact that it may take a few hours to download is no biggie.  I'm not that impatient.

PlayStation Network Currently Down

UPDATE: 7:19PST When should you expect the service back up? PlayStation on Twitter says that technicians are currently working on the problem, but there is no ETA for when it will return.

The original story appears below.

The PlayStation Network is currently offline, according to the PlayStation support website.

A notice on the site reads, "We are aware that some users are experiencing difficulty logging into the PSN. We will update this article with any changes that occur in regards to this issue. Thank you for your patience."

Similarly, the AskPlayStation twitter account has a message that reads, "We are aware that there have been issues reported with PSN. Thanks for your patience as we investigate."

While not quite as severe, Xbox Live is also currently facing issues with the video and music store. A message on the Xbox Live status site reads, "Unable to view certain content from within Xbox Music and Xbox Video, such as the Explore and Radio features? Don't worry, we're doing everything we can to get this back to normal. Thanks for staying patient in the meantime. Check back in a half hour for an update on our progress."

We'll continue monitoring the gaming services, and like you, we hope they'll be back up in time for all the new consoles that'll likely be coming online after Christmas tomorrow morning.

Loadout Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 24 Desember 2014 | 11.52

Loadout feels good on the PlayStation 4. It's not just how well the game has adapted Sony's controller, but also that small changes have translated into some big differences. This free-to-play third-person shooter is all about collecting gun parts and crafting them into vicious weapons that lash out with fire, lightning, or spiked metal spheres--just as it was on the PC. But on the PlayStation 4, Loadout tries new things, completely revamping its method of distributing weapon parts that makes collecting them almost as exciting as constructing them into a vast array of deadly guns. Despite a lackluster campaign and a locked-out ranked mode, Loadout is a frantic and entertaining shooter on the PlayStation 4 and will keep you happy on your quest for loot, with a smile on your face and a numb trigger finger.

The highly craftable guns are the stars of the show, and the customizable loadouts set the stage. Abandoning traditional classes, Loadout instead offers a toybox that slowly fills with various gun parts that you can play with using its robust weaponcrafting menu. For instance, creating a powerful shotgun is as easy as snapping a scatter barrel and a shell-loading magazine onto a gun chassis. Swap that scatter barrel out for a Gatling barrel and strap on a high-capacity magazine to create a Gatling gun, and so on. Different ammo types kick things up a notch or two, and can make your weapon belch fire or send out a slap of electricity that sends chain lightning through a group of hapless foes. Not all ammo types are deadly: loading your gun with healing rounds transforms your weapon from a death dealer to a wound healer, and there's nothing wrong with wanting to be the team medic. Or, if you're feeling sneaky, you can use a gun with a silencer, and, using the disguise equipment, go undercover to infiltrate the opposing team and silently take them by surprise. And you might as well slap on a suit, mask, and tie from the outfitter store while you're at it, and become the spy Team Fortress 2 always knew you could be.

Earning parts in Loadout on PlayStation 4 is a much different experience than in the PC version of the game. On a PC, you unlock parts from daily prizes or in a tech tree by earning experience and spending blutes, Loadout's in-game currency awarded at the end of matches. On the PlayStation 4 edition, weapon parts, gear, and safes are often awarded at the end of finished multiplayer matches or campaign missions. Safes, which contain items of varying rarity, are opened with dynamite, which is bought with spacebux, Loadout's other currency that must be purchased with actual cash and not blutes, somewhat like the currency in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive's weapon cases and keys. Parts are assigned levels, as well as a degree of rarity that moves from common to rare items. Rarer parts can grant optional attribute boosts, such as decreased reload times or additional health.

Comparing the two systems of delivering items, from the tech tree of the PC version to earning parts post-match on the PlayStation 4, I prefer the latter. Parts and gear come at a steady flow in Loadout on PlayStation 4, and I can't deny the giddy feeling of anticipation that grows just before opening each loot chest or safe filled with new toys to play with. You gain a lot of weapon parts as you progress, but not everything is worth keeping. The included fusion mechanic allows you to take a lower-tier item and merge it with other disposable parts to increase its potency. It's a great way to burn off extra junk you don't need, while making your weapons even stronger, all the while not spending any actual cash on upgrades yourself. And the upgrade is often quickly apparent, too; promoting that level three pyro rocket to level five or higher can mean the difference between leaving your foes medium rare or well done.

Baldies do it better.

Crafting and naming your own custom weapon is a joy I've rarely experienced in other online shooters. A machine gun with the offensive output of mosquito bites later roars as it rips flesh from bone. A feeble rocket launcher that evokes more laughs than screams evolves over time to become a frightening, two-hit kill monster that causes enemies to burst into flame--it's enough to bring a tear to your eye.

The weak campaign mode, however, is a wet blanket that stifles some of that fire. There is no "story" to speak of, only five chapters with missions that consist of you fighting waves of AI-controlled alien baddies on the available multiplayer maps and gametypes. For at least a few missions, the campaign is passable, if not somewhat disappointing. But after playing through chapter after chapter of similar battles, the venture becomes tedious and dull. The only real incentive to play each campaign is tied into Loadout's new method of distributing loot. Campaign mode offers loot packs and safes that drop randomly as you play through a match, and that unfortunately means having to wade through the muck for some of those precious parts and equipment--some of which, like deployable health packs and jump boots, is awarded at the end of certain missions. At least collecting the extra loot in campaign is still enjoyable; it's just the parts in between that are the issue.

The highly craftable guns are the stars of the show, and the customizable loadouts set the stage.

One additional positive about the campaign, however, is that it allows you to earn some additional spacebux without having to fork over any of your hard-earned cash. Currently, Loadout on PlayStation 4 is the only version to have the campaign included with the package. The PC version is set to have the currently separate campaign (now in beta) merged with the base game next year.

Thankfully, the core multiplayer experience is just as exhilarating and violent as ever, and it is here you spend most of your time. The controls adapt well to DualShock 4, though aiming does feel a little squirrelly when zoomed in--a problem that can be alleviated by lowering aim sensitivity. Other than that, Loadout plays exceptionally well on the controller; skirmishes haven't lost an ounce of their raw intensity in the transfer from the keyboard and mouse. Across six varied maps that include deep crevasses, hidden pathways, and high ledges, you sprint, dive, and leap high into the air while raining fire on enemies above and below.

Loadout's action is ferocious, and each clash erupts in a chaotic frenzy of flying rockets, popping grenades, and neon lasers; the vibrant cartoon visuals are a colorful foil to the absurd violence onscreen. During battles, flesh is seared from bone, heads are blown apart to leave bouncing eyeballs and a brain, and somewhere in the fracas is a person thrusting their gun between their hips as a pair of disembodied legs run across the war-tattered field before collapsing. Loadout is often as hilarious as it is grotesque, leaving you vacillating between laughing at the slapstick insanity and cringing at the immense gore. And you know what? It's quite a lot of fun--though much of it is like a riding a rollercoaster through a whirlwind of bullets and body parts.

Bots can be a great part of any multiplayer shooter, but their rarity in the genre makes them a pleasant delight in Loadout.

Multiplayer consists of four-on-four matches among five game types: blitz, death snatch, extraction, domination, and jackhammer. Blitz and domination are won by taking control points on a map, the latter of which has you fighting to control three points at once. Death snatch is Loadout's take on classic death match, and plays similar to Call of Duty's Kill Confirmed mode. In death snatch, dead opponents drop a vial of glowing blutes that must be snagged in order for the death to count as a kill. Extraction tasks each team with protecting a teammate who collects blutonium deposits and places them into marked grinders to score points. Finally, jackhammer is a mode similar to capture the flag, except the flag is a massive hammer that smashes enemies into itty bitty meaty chunks. You can kill up to five opponents, which adds extra points to your score when the hammer is claimed at your base.

There are two downsides to multiplayer; the most notable is the lack of the ranked mode, Annihilation, which is currently locked out with "Coming Soon!" written over it. Instead, you are left with the unranked arena, which performs rather poorly in terms of matching you with players of similar skill. You have an overall level that increases as you gain experience points earned after completing matches. However, that rank is effectively slashed in the arena, and you often find yourself paired with unskilled allies or against a team of seasoned players. I realize this is the caveat of any unranked multiplayer, but it's incredibly frustrating to play a session consisting of about ten losses in a row due to unbalanced matchmaking. The other issue with multiplayer is that with only six maps, things soon slide into repetition. Having five game types does help deter some boredom, but after a dozen hours I was more than ready for a change in scenery. And just when will there be more than three customizable characters to choose from?

How dare I be denied?!

Loadout on PlayStation 4 is not without its issues, but overall it remains an energetic, madcap shooter with a violent sense of humor that delights as often as it disgusts. There are still tweaks to be made--the underwhelming campaign is the first that comes to mind--and, once released, the ranked mode will also greatly increase its value, which is a lot, considering that the game is already free of charge. Regardless, there is a lot of entertainment to be found in Loadout. The welcome new changes to earning gun parts will keep you killing, collecting, and customizing for many blood-soaked hours to come as the game continues to evolve, just like the many weapons that call it home.

The Gist - 4 Huge Games Industry Dramas Of 2014

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 23 Desember 2014 | 11.52

@Diluted_NZ They sold it for money. Money needed to TRY to make VR into a constant option for games and such... As it has popped several times in the last decades and never got fully backed. As for the competence in the team, I think having John Carmack, sums up how well equiped they already are.

As for the profits, that one I get. But it was never promised any type of reward for backing the project.. Only that they would get the first development kit. The community got things started, having FB only helps expanding the horizons. (Money wise)

But yeah, we'll have to wait and see... The Rift is due summer 2015. Until then we'll see how the facebook buyout will change Oculus.

The Last of Us 2 Mentioned in Former Naughty Dog Developer's Resume

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Senin, 22 Desember 2014 | 11.52

I know some people are against sequels but TLOU was great and I could see great potential for both a direct-sequel or simply a new game set within the same world but telling a completely new story around new characters.

Hell, I Think a new game would be amazing if it was told from the perspective of Ish, that was one of the most memorable "side-stories" and it was left open  to tell a great story.

If you don't remember, Ish is the guy that lived in the Sewer area where you come across his notes and it reveals a great storyline about a small group of people that he helped survive there and build up a little community......

(SPOILERS , don't read if you don't want to know about it):

After they get overun and things start to go to hell he ends up escaping (leaving the sign at the exit not to go in), you never find out what became of him but that he did indeed "survive" and make it out.

So it'd be a perfect way to tell a new storyline while keeping it connected in some way to the first game.

Xbox One's Telltale Game Collection Includes Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, and More

Telltale Games has released The Telltale Games Collection on Xbox One, which includes five complete seasons of its adventure games series.

The $110 collection gets you the following (click the links for GameSpot's reviews):

If bought separately through the Xbox One Games Store, these games would cost $130, so the bundle saves you $20.

Game of Thrones - A Telltale Games Series and Tales From the Borderlands are the newest games in the bunch, both of which recently released their first episodes. Both were also reviewed very well by GameSpot, which gave them an 8/10 and 9/10 respectively.

In fact, all the Telltale games in the collection received high scores from GameSpot, so if the Xbox One is your platform of choice, it's not a bad way to catch up with them. You probably just don't want to play all of them in one sitting.

Minecraft developer Mojang and Telltale Games also recently announced a brand new episodic series based on Minecraft, launching in 2015 for PC, consoles, and mobile devices.

Christmas Comes to Battlefield 4

If you've been playing Battlefield 4 on the Community Test Environment (CTE), you probably noticed that the serious military shooter got a little holiday cheer lately.

As you can see in the video above posted to YouTube by user DANNYonPC, a bunch of items and aesthetic modifications were added to the game. All players now have access to new snowman, Santa Claus, and reindeer masks. Other items have also been modified to match the with Christmas-theme, like ammon boxes and C4, which now appear as wrapped presents.

DICE usually uses the CTE servers exclusive to Battlefield Premium members on PC to test changes to Battlefield 4 before rolling them out to the regular game, but at the moment it's not clear if we'll see the Christmas-themed items on consoles and normal servers.

DICE recently released the Final Stand DLC, though despite what its name suggests, it may not be the last piece of content for the game.

"With Battlefield 4 Final Stand released, we hope and believe that you will enjoy it together with the rest of the game for a long time," DICE said. "However, there is one thing we want to assure you: there is more content coming for Battlefield 4."

Tetris Ultimate Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Sabtu, 20 Desember 2014 | 11.52

On the year of its 30th anniversary, it's hard to think of new things to say about Tetris. Few games even come close to being as universally recognized and understood as the Russian puzzle game that has caused countless people to dream about stacking blocks into perfect lines.

So as hard as it is simply to write something original about the classic, it must be harder to invent new and exciting ways in which to actually play it. As a result, just about every gaming platform under the sun (and even many non-gaming platforms--hello, graphing calculators) tends to end up with at least one or two new editions of the same old formula, maybe experimenting with a new mode or two but mostly sticking to what's tried and true. Ubisoft's crack at celebrating the series' history falls into this exact trap, and Tetris Ultimate is mostly a game you can look at and say, "Yep, that's Tetris."

Tetris. It's Tetris.

The basics are unchanged. You are given a vertical playing field in which you drop tetrominos--various shapes composed of four squares each. As a randomized parade of pieces falls from the top of the screen one at a time, you can move each one left or right as well as rotate it clockwise or counterclockwise. The goal is to create a straight, unbroken horizontal line of blocks, which removes the line from the playing field and scores you points (more points if you can eliminate several lines at once). The more lines you clear, the faster the game becomes.

Over three decades, this formula has remained largely unchanged, and rarely have the rules been so much as tweaked. But while there are no options to customize the look or sound of the game, Tetris Ultimate sports an admirable list of settings that let you tailor the feel of the game to your liking. For instance, you can turn off the hold queue (which allows you to save a piece for later use), change the behavior of the random generator, or turn off the more advanced wall kick and t-spin maneuvers. You can also tweak how long you can rotate a piece at the bottom of its drop--the controversial "easy" or infinite spin is not a default. You can't get super specific with these values, but the options are nice to have regardless.

Four-player cooperative modes can seem overwhelming, but they're a nice twist on classic Tetris.

While the potential variety of Tetris may seem limited, previous iterations of the series have nonetheless seen some rather inventive new modes using tetrominos. By comparison, Tetris Ultimate's mode selection is bare-bones. In addition to your standard marathon and endless modes there's Sprint (a race to see how quickly you can clear 40 lines), Ultra (a high-score challenge where you only have three minutes to play), and a couple of multiplayer-only battle modes--one with power-ups and one without. All modes can be played with humans or bots, with team versus team and co-op variations of each.

Co-op and team modes are the most interesting twists on the Tetris formula, as they widen the playing area (and thus lengthen the width you need to cover to get a line) and divide the screen up so that each player has his or her own designated section to drop pieces into, with a couple of columns of shared space in between that both players can use. Communication becomes important not only because scoring is impossible alone but also because all players on a team share both the pool of upcoming pieces as well as the single held piece, so if you're saving that straight block for a specific purpose, make sure your partners don't use it themselves.

While there are no options to customize the look or sound of the game, Tetris Ultimate sports an admirable list of settings that let you tailor the feel of the game to your liking.

When playing online, there doesn't seem to be a great system for matchmaking similarly skilled players. The only "rank" you ever achieve is designated by how far you are able to get in either the marathon or endless mode. But playing vanilla Tetris without interference is quite a different beast from a battle mode match against another player, and this doesn't appear to be a consideration when matching players together. Furthermore, many matches are hit with unfortunate lags and/or bugs, and if the game's host disconnects for any reason, the other players are out of luck even if they're 14 levels deep in a marathon game.

If you don't want to put up with the occasional lag that comes from playing against strangers, you can pretend to play against your friends by challenging their "Tetris Self," a bot that tries to play at about the same skill level as its player. It's an interesting idea, but it doesn't feel any more special than playing against an AI with a custom name--which is all this is.

When playing alone or in offline multiplayer mode, Tetris Ultimate nails most of the basics. Unfortunately, it doesn't go far beyond them. The four-player versus and co-op modes are a lot of fun, and the classic high-score chase is as solid as ever, but there are no visual or music options, and the selection of modes feels lacking. To be fair, at $10, Tetris Ultimate is one of the cheaper Tetris games to hit consoles in recent years, and what you get for that price is perfectly competent. The game's main menu features a prominent store icon that promises more modes coming soon, so those looking for more variety may get what they're looking for via DLC.

It turns out that Tetris is a lot harder to play if you can't see your pieces.

Part solid execution and part missed opportunity, Tetris Ultimate is hard to judge. If all you want is a good version of classic Tetris for your new console, this one will suit your needs well. The low price is nice and the gameplay options provided are a nice touch, but it doesn't do enough to earn the "ultimate" moniker.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection Adds Updated Halo 3: ODST for Free

Early adopters of Halo: The Master Chief Collection will get an updated version of Halo 3: ODST's campaign and a reimagined version of the Halo 2 multiplayer map Relic for free, developer 343 Industries has announced.

343 Industries says that development on the campaign for Halo 3: ODST has just begun. It will be available within Halo: The Master Chief Collection, upgraded to 1080p resolution, running at 60fps. If you played Halo: The Master Chief Collection between launch (November 11) and December 19, you'll get it for free.

The same is true for the Relic Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer Map, which 343 Industries will reimagine and remaster at 1080p and 60fps. 343 Industries said it chose this map based on its suitability for Slayer and Objective modes and its ability to support teams of varying sizes.

If you bought the game between those dates, you'll also get one free month of Xbox Live Gold, and an exclusive in-game Nameplate and Avatar. Find more details here.

Head of 343 Industries Bonnie Ross explained that the developer is offering these items for free in gratitude to fans that stuck with Halo: The Master Chief Collection during its troubled launch, which suffered from severe matchmaking issues.

"This has been a humbling experience and highlighted how we as a studio can – and need – to do better for Xbox fans around the world," Ross said. "We are so grateful to our fans who have stood by our side and we appreciate all of your patience as we worked through these issues."

Ross also said that a content update next week will add all 10 episodes of the cooperative experience Spartan Ops for Halo 4 to playlists, as well as address other issues.

Isaiah Austin Added to NBA 2K15 Roster

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Rabu, 17 Desember 2014 | 11.52

2K has announced the addition of former Baylor Bears center player Isaiah Austin to the roster on NBA 2K15 on all platforms. Austin is now available as a playable free agent to celebrate his courage following his diagnosis of Marfan syndrome. Prior to the diagnosis, Austin had been a first-round prospect in this year's NBA draft.

Players can add Austin onto their team as a free agent, as well as in the MyTEAM mode. He can also be seen on this week's episode of NBA2K TV. To appear in the game, Austin underwent facial scanning at the NBA 2K studios.

NBA 2K15 launched on October 7 for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game was well-received in GameSpot's review, praised for its refined animations and customisation options offered in MyCareer mode. NBA 2K15 was the top-selling game for the month of October in the US, beating out Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and The Evil Within.

Valve Removes Controversial Massacre Sim From Greenlight [UPDATE]

[UPDATE] Hatred has returned to Steam Greenlight, where users can continue to vote on whether they are interested in the game.

The original story appears below.

Hatred, the ultraviolent massacre sim that gained notoriety due to its controversial content, has been removed from Stream's Greenlight program.

Steam custodian Valve confirmed it had deleted the listing, after it had rapidly accrued thousands of votes, suggesting that the game's brutal content had spurred its decision.

"Based on what we've seen on Greenlight we would not publish Hatred on Steam," Valve spokesperson Doug Lombardi told Eurogamer. "As such we'll be taking it down."

Hatred was revealed to the public in October with a trailer that immediately drew controversy. The video, above, features a lone gunman preparing for a massacre in his home, before setting himself upon the surrounding neighbourhood.

Later, the video depicts stabbings, mall massacres, and shotgun executions. The nameless character, dressed in a leather trench coat, is at one point seen jamming a pistol into a fallen woman's mouth, before pulling the trigger.

Valve's decision to not support the game follows a similar distancing from the game's engine creator, Epic Games. The company has previously said: "Epic Games isn't involved in this project. Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use 'for any lawful purpose,' and we explicitly don't exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we've asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product."

Creative Destruction, the game's Poland based developer, has responded to Valve's removal of the game by saying it respects the corporation's decision, adding that it was overjoyed with the response from supporters of the project.

In a message to fans, the company wrote: "Even though games like Manhunt or Postal are still available on Steam we of course fully respect Valve's decision, as they have right to do so. In the same time we want to assure you that this won't in any way impact the game development, game's vision or gameplay features we're aiming for. The game is still to be released in Q2 2015 as planned.

"Moreover we don't treat this as a failure because yet again this showed us a huge community support we're totally overwhelmed with. After only a couple of hours Greenlight campaign being live, Hatred gathered 13,148 up votes and ended up on a #7 on top 100 list.

"This is the best proof for us that there are diehard Hatred fans out there waiting for this game to be released. And that we need to keep going to deliver them a game that offers exciting and challenging gameplay. The whole situation only pushes us forward to go against any adversity and not to give up. It also makes us want to provide our fans Hatred pre-orders sooner, as many of you have asked for them."

No More Balance Patches for Wii U Smash Bros.

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Selasa, 16 Desember 2014 | 11.52

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U game director Masahiro Sakurai said in a recent interview they Nintendo has no plans to further adjust or balance the fighting game.

Fixes for online play will be continue coming bit by bit, but Sakurai responded to a questions from Famitsu magazine (translated by EventHubs) about whether he plans "on adjusting or balancing the game further through a patch" by saying, "We don't have any such plans." But just to be safe, he also added, "If there are any glaring issues, we may address them."

While Smash Bros. has become a mainstay of fighting game tournaments over the years, the large roster of characters also makes character balancing notoriously lopsided. However, that doesn't mean the game won't be getting additional downloadable content down the road. Mewtwo has already been confirmed as a character that will be available in 2015 to players who own the game on both 3DS and Wii U versions of the game. However, it's unlikely that there will be any additional characters added afterward.

GS News Update: Xbox One Outsells PS4 in November

@thebeachguy90 Yeah it looks massive...

Bloodborne (A.K.A. Dark Demon's Souls II 2015 Remix, From Software makes the same game over and over and over again... There is nothing wrong with those games but this is essentially copy and pasted from those with a different character and plot, aside from that it looks identical)

Street Fighter 5 (any edition after the original will release on EVERY platform negating its exclusivity on the PlayStation 4, this is Capcom after all, there will be 5 different editions of this game...)

The Order: 1886 (Looks to be a technical marvel but lacking substance and interesting gameplay, also it looks to be another movie-esque style game similar to The Last of Us and at the same time another Driveclub in the making, great technology but a seemingly abysmal game attached to it)

Uncharted 4 (Nothing bad to say about this)

Conclusion

That essentially leaves Uncharted 4 for the whole year, massive arsenal he said, greatness awaits they said.... Underwhelming I say...

The Crew Review

Written By Kom Limpulnam on Kamis, 11 Desember 2014 | 11.52

The Crew tries to be a driving game with something for everyone. You can team up with a group of friends for an epic road trip filled with fast-paced illegal activities, and seamlessly explore a massive map of the U.S., from the tip of Maine, all the way down to Miami, over to Los Angeles and back again, passing through other iconic cities along the way. Though it's true that all of this is possible, the experience isn't all that it's made out to be. The Crew tries to do a lot, and while it technically delivers the features it promises, it frequently stumbles over itself. There are brief moments of joy within, but just when you start to think the game's turned a corner, a bump in the road sends your joyride careening off course. When the best thing a racing game has going for it is the variety of environments it has to offer, you know something's amiss.

You start off in the streets of Detroit, but it's not long before you're rolling through mountains, everglades, and forests. The huge maps and its colossal number of activities is intimidating at first, but that's great: the more places to go and things to do, the merrier. Story missions, which take you through a trope-filled campaign that plays out like a Fast & Furious sequel, send you from one region of the country to the next, and missions emerge out of the blue along the way. You street race, smuggle contraband, take down competing criminals, and tackle bite-sized emergent challenges that test your abilities behind the wheel while you're on the go. There are hundreds of things to do, but only some are truly fun. The problem? With so much ground to cover, The Crew feels and looks like it's stretched too thin, and it's evident from the start. The Crew's world may be massive and varied, but it's not good-looking. It's constantly plagued by texture and geometry pop-in, and looks generally outdated. People, buildings, the environment, and most importantly, the cars, are represented by disappointing models that suffer from an unsightly amount of aliasing.

At some point during your journey across America, you wonder: what was that about forming a crew, again? Despite the game's title and pitch, The Crew is a single-player experience tucked into a multiplayer server. It starts with a story that casts you on a grand mission, and you're constantly encouraged by your cohorts to head to the next step along the way. You always have the option of inviting three of your friends along for the ride, but at no point does the game inspire you to do so. Think extra crewmates will help you on a difficult mission? Nope; the game scales its difficulty accordingly. If anything, forming a crew is a chore that's easy to brush aside. The best thing you can do to improve your chances at success is to upgrade your car, but the way in which The Crew facilitates this can get a little frustrating. While the game won't prevent you from entering a story mission, it will tell you if you're below the recommended level. You can purchase kits when you're avatar's level is high enough, but it takes a while to hit successive milestones.

In practice, you earn new parts as rewards for missions, but playing story missions alone won't provide you with enough parts to get your vehicle to the appropriate level towards the end of the game. That's when you have to grind through optional missions, which pop up as you drive around the map. Some of these objectives are enjoyable, such as long-distance jumps and missions that challenge you to drive as fast and as far as you can while keeping your tires on the road. Others, like the missions that challenge you to hit a series of targets that are strewn both on and off the road, are frustrating. Essentially, the game asks you to drive like a jerk, and it's not fun when you can't help but careen into other cars and buildings as you try your best to fulfill the criteria to earn a medal. It comes down to the luck of the draw. Sometimes the coast is clear, and other times you're bombarded by a phalanx of other vehicles that you can't avoid when pursuing objectives.

Where we're going we don't need roads.

These optional missions can be useful when you need to level up, but they can also be an annoyance when you're just trying to get from point A to point B. Every time you hit the road, you eventually cross the virtual gate that activates these missions, but there's nothing you can do to prevent them from activating automatically. Pass through a gate, and you have to suffer through a cluttered user interface, which starts with icons, but ends with a large results screen that blocks your view while driving. Apart from driving off the road to avoid a gate, or entering into a menu to abort after a mission activates, you're at the mercy of the map.

One of the best aspects of a racing game is the selection of cars that you get to choose from, but The Crew has a meager selection and does a poor job of incentivizing you to explore your options. Story missions are broken up by the type of vehicle they require: street, dirt, raid, performance, or circuit. Not every vehicle can be kitted out to fit every spec, but the one you get at the start of the game definitely can. Given that you earn new parts for the vehicle you complete missions with, you are never compelled to pick up new cars. Maybe your curiosity will get the better of you and you'll check out a new car, but there's nothing stopping you from using the same car from the beginning of the game through to the end.

Although the variety of cars is underwhelming and underutilized, the story missions take advantage of the different car specs in a good way. As you travel from one region of the country to the next, you encounter different terrain and environments that call upon the different types of kits you can fit to your car. You race street cars through dense cities, take on dirt car races through construction sites and rough terrain, and tear across states in souped up performance vehicles. The story missions are largely the best moments in the game, however, there exceptions: raid car missions and fleeing missions.

Raid missions are fun at first--you charge through mountains, swamps, and back country in an armored vehicle--but at some point, the game decides that you need to fulfill precise criteria, such as collecting objects on rough terrain under a strict time limit, and raid cars are anything but precise. They slip and slide all over the place, and when these missions leave no room for error, you end up very frustrated when you're cut short due to the game's poor physics. The same can be said for missions where you have to flee from cops, who are incredibly overpowered. These missions are not fun in the least, and the cops' unusual bursts of speed feels like a product of driving games of old. This isn't the only example of frustrating AI. During races against the computer, cars sometimes drive off of tracks for no reason, taking a 90 degree turn out of the blue before flying off of a cliff.

Essentially, the game asks you to drive like a jerk, and it's not fun when you can't help but careen into other cars and buildings as you try your best to fulfill the criteria to earn a medal.

With rough physics and AI, you get into a lot of collisions, but luckily, damage doesn't hinder your car's driving capabilities. However, you do have to endure a slow-motion cutscene as punishment when you take a strong hit. Eventually, you have to pay a negligible fee to fix your car if you've gotten in a lot of accidents, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to how much money you earn during missions. If crashing is not a big deal, wasting players' time with slow-motion cutscenes as punishment is pointless and disrespectful of their time.

Unfortunately, you have to endure the game's questionable physics in other scenarios, most notably during player-versus-player races. It's nearly a guarantee that each PVP race will start with a ridiculous display of bugginess when opponents' cars suddenly speed up and flip in multiple directions at the drop of a hat. I've seen cars teleport into the sky, and rotate uncontrollably before appearing 20 feet down the track for no reason. These moments of chaos are funny, but they make for an inconsistent and unpredictable experience. Pray it doesn't happen to you. That's assuming you can even get into a PVP match. There are a handful of lobbies across the map, but they're severely underpopulated. It's a rare occurrence that you can find enough people to race against in less than 15 minutes. Luckily, you have the option to drive around while you wait, but it's still deflating when you can't find anyone to play with.

Keep in mind that if UPlay, PSN, or Xbox Live is down, you can't play The Crew, even if you just want to go solo. During my time with the game, I was booted due to server or connection issues on a daily basis, which was very frustrating. The most enjoyment you get out of the game's connected world comes from player-vs-player competitions, but even they have issues.

When The Crew puts you into races with good AI, and you get to race through interesting and varied environments, you get the feeling that you're playing a good game. When you struggle to find people to join your crew online, balk at the outdated graphics, and shake your head at the AI and the occasionally unpredictable physics, you realize: The Crew isn't that good after all. When you can't play due to server issues, you find a new game to play and leave The Crew in your dust.
