Even when there aren't a ton of new game releases, sales charts are still fun. The July NPD top 10 games sales list below may not have many surprises, but it's always exciting to see where your favorite games fall in the rankings.

Overall the industry is up 16% over last year at $514.3 million. That increase was driven primarily by strong hardware sales (up 100% at $198.8 million) while software was down 15% overall at $178.2 million. The NPD's analyst Liam Callahan notes, "When combining life-to-date sales of Xbox One and PS4 after nine months, and comparing them to the combined totals of nine months of sales for Xbox 360 and PS3, sales of the newest consoles are larger than the prior generation by close to 80 percent."

July 2014 Top 10 US Game Sales

Note that these sales reflect only physical retail in the US. Ranking are based on combined sales for July month across all listed platforms.

  1. The Last of Us (PS4, PS3)
  2. Minecraft (360, PS3)
  3. FIFA 14 (360,PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Vita)
  4. Watch Dogs (PS4, 360, PS3, Xbox One, PC)
  5. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)
  6. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Xbox One, 360, PS4, PS3, Wii U, PC)
  7. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
  8. Sniper Elite III (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
  9. NBA 2K14 (360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  10. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, 3DS, DS, PS4, Wii U, Xbox One, Vita, PC)

Nintendo wrote in its US sales update that some of their games ranked higher on an individual game basis and Callahan confirms the same data. "Four SKUs for the 3DS would make the top ten software list when ranked on an SKU basis: Tomodachi Life, Pokemon Y, Pokemon X, and Mario Kart 7. With the addition of Mario Kart 8, five of the top ten SKUs this month were published by Nintendo and helped drive Nintendo into the top video game publisher spot for July 2014."

As noted earlier, the PS4 came out on top overall in terms of current-gen console sales for the seventh month in a row.

The coming months are going to become a lot more heated though, especially as we get into the incredibly crowded fall. What do you think will actually topple Minecraft in the coming months? Let us know in the comments below.

Monthly video game sales data from the NPD will be announced later today, but Sony sent out some early highlights ahead of the report. And first on that list: PlayStation 4 was the number one "next generation game console" in sales for the seventh consecutive month in the US. Note that, while at GameSpot we typically refer to PS4 and Xbox One as "current-gen," Sony refers to them as "next-gen" in the press quotes.

Sony reported that PS4 "led the month for next generation software sales by a considerable margin," and that "more than half of total next generation software sales" were for PS4.

The number one game in current-gen software sales was The Last of Us Remastered.

Sony also claimed the number one spot in "combined home console hardware sales" for the second month running.

We'll have more information from the NPD later today, but that answers most people's biggest question of "who came out on top for the month?" But that shouldn't be too big of a surprise since Sony revealed that the PS4 passed the 10 million consoles sold worldwide milestone earlier this week at their Gamescom press conference.

Have you made the transition to a current-gen system yet, or are you holding out for a little bit longer?

Ahead of the NPD sales data coming later today, Nintendo revealed some of the milestones for their top-performing games last month in the US.

Mario Kart 8 leads the fray with 1 million copies sold. Nintendo notes in a press release that it's "the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million)." Nintendo reported late last month that global sales for Mario Kart 8 have already surpassed 2.82 million.

And that success has translated into momentum for the Wii U as well. Nintendo writes that, "Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013."

We don't have specific hardware numbers on Nintendo's consoles, but Nintendo isn't shy about the 3DS software numbers. The portable platform is at 40 million games sold. Updated sales totals for games that have sold over 1 million copies according to Nintendo are:

Nintendo added, "Four of the 10 best-selling software SKUs for July are exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS," including:

  • Tomodachi Life at number 5 (and more than 85,000 games sold)
  • Pokemon Y at number 8
  • Pokemon X at number 9
  • Mario Kart 7 at number 10

Note that these titles won't necessarily show up in the overall NPD list coming out later today, since those numbers reflect total sales across every platform a game is available on. Nintendo's ranking breaks the numbers down to an individual SKU basis (meaning the game's release on a single platform).

With Super Smash Bros., The Legend of Zelda Hyrule Warriors, and a whole slate of Amiibo figurines still coming before the end of the year, it'll be exciting to see how much Nintendo grows after the rockiness of last year. But what are you most looking forward to from Nintendo? Let us know in the comments below.

Just because Dontnod Entertainment's only two games, 2013's Remember Me and next year's Life is Strange, feature women in the lead role, that doesn't mean the studio is trying to make a statement. "That's not us trying to be different for the sake of being different," creative director Jean-Maxime Moris told Joystiq at Gamescom. "It's not as if we're trying to 'fix the industry.'"

The protagonist of Life is Strange is a college-aged woman named Max. There are other female characters who play prominent roles in the game, too, including Max's friend Chloe, and a missing woman named Rachel Amber. Dontnod art director Michel Koch said the studio has gone to great lengths to create a realistic world for the women, which has required a good deal of research.

"We have women in the dev team--not that many because it's still the video game industry and there are not that many women--but we have women working on the game," Koch said. "And our writer, which is an American writer we've worked with before, he's consulting with his nieces. He's showing scripts to them, to read it and see if it feels genuine and fresh."

A recent study showed that women make up 22 percent of the global video game industry workforce, which is double the figure from 2009.

The topic of the representation of women in games has been a major talking point this year, following news out of E3 in June that Assassin's Creed Unity and Far Cry 4 would not feature playable female characters. Opinions on the subject have flooded in, with some people saying Ubisoft was unfairly singled out, while others maintain that the industry should not shy away from the women in games discussion.

Following Remember Me's release last year, Dontnod revealed that before it landed a publishing deal with Capcom, other publishers didn't want to work with them because they thought having a women in a leading role would limit the game's sales potential.

Life is Strange was announced on Monday and launches in 2015 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. It will be released episodically, much like Telltale Games' The Walking Dead. The game's unique twist is that Max can rewind time to see how events would unfold if she took a different course of action. For more on the game, which also has lovely hand-drawn art and is published by Square Enix, check out the video above.

BioWare Austin's recently unveiled 4v1 PC RPG Shadow Realms could see a console release, according to the studio's general manager Jeff Hickman.

Speaking to GameSpot at Gamescom, Hickman was surprised by some early reports indicating the game was a PC exclusive, saying, "I saw some reports coming out yesterday saying [Shadow Realms] was exclusive to PC, which nobody ever said...there is nothing that says that if the fans want it, and everything goes well on PC, that we don't push it to console. It's a Frostbite game, so it's straightforward, and we can do it if we want to."

Hickman also described how the game's action focus would translate well to console, despite the game's primary development taking place on PC.

"We definitely are PC first," said Hickman. "PC is the tip of the spear for us. We find that this type of game really lends itself to PC. But when you see it, what I think you'll find is...imagine that there could be a controller hooked up to it. You will go, 'Oh, yeah!' because that's how it plays. This an action-RPG, not an MMO, not a pushing-buttons-on-your-keyboard slowly type of thing. This is sword swinging, dodging, blocking, dynamic action."

Revealed during EA's Gamescom press conference--and after weeks of teasing--Shadow Realms is an online-only RPG featuring cooperative 4v1 gameplay in a modern fantasy setting. Shadow Realms is due to launch on PC in late 2015, but interested players can sign up for access to a closed alpha over on the game's website.

The PlayStation 4 is getting more free-to-play games. This week, Sony announced on the PlayStation Blog three new free-to-play titles for the console: Snow, Guns Up!, and Hustle Kings.

Snow is an open-world skiing and snowboarding game from Poppermost Productions, a small studio of ten people in Sweden. The game's goal is to capture the feeling of zipping down a mountain, as well as the peaceful nature of being outdoors. It has multiple modes, including a free roam option where you can go where you want and do what you want. In the competitive mode, you can go head-to-head with other players in an attempt to pull off the best tricks.

Guns Up!

At launch, only skiing will be supported, but Poppermost says it hopes to add snowboarding--and other winter action sports--through future updates. Snow is currently available on Steam for PC as an Early Access title; the PS4 version is "coming soon."

As for Guns Up!, it is an action strategy game coming to PS4 this year alongside PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita versions. You play as a general who must strategically deploy units and resources to lay waste to enemy soldiers and their base. It is a cross-buy title, and a beta will be held later this year ahead of its release.

Guns Up! is the first game from Valkyrie Entertainment, which previously work on art for Infamous: Second Son and League of Legends.

The third free-to-play game confirmed for PS4 this week is billiards title Hustle Kings, which is already available on PS3 and PS Vita. Throughout the game, you'll earn Hustle Kings Credits (HKC) for completing the various challenges, and because it's a free-to-play game, this currency will also be available to buy with real money. But if you don't like that idea, you can pay for an "upgrade package" that will allow you to play the entire game without the need for HKC. A price was not announced.

Free-to-play games are nothing new for PS4. Others currently available include Warframe, DC Universe Online, War Thunder, and Blacklight: Retribution.

Do you play free-to-play games on console? Let us know in the comments below!

2. Minecraft (360, PS3)
  3. FIFA 14 (360,PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Vita)

As noted earlier, the PS4 came out on top overall in terms of current-gen console sales for the seventh month in a row.
